Office Link 2: Ledger Live for macOS
Office Link 3: Ledger Live for Linux

Beginner tip

If you’re unsure where to download, open your Ledger device packaging or the official Ledger Help Center and follow the links listed there. Ledger updates are frequent — always use the latest supported version.

Install Ledger Live

Windows

Run the .exe installer and follow the setup wizard. Allow the app through your firewall if prompted. On first run you’ll be asked to accept terms and choose basic preferences.

macOS

Open the .dmg file, drag Ledger Live to Applications, then open it. macOS may require you to confirm permissions in System Preferences for USB access.

Linux

Use the AppImage or .deb package depending on your distribution. Make the AppImage executable with chmod +x and run it, or install the .deb with your package manager.

Permissions & drivers

On Windows, Ledger Live may prompt to install drivers for USB communication. Approve only drivers from verified publishers. On Linux, you may need to add udev rules — Ledger provides a ready-to-use file on their site.

Login & Account Access

Ledger Live does not store private keys

Important: Ledger Live is an interface. Your private keys always remain in your Ledger hardware device and are never transmitted to Ledger’s servers. When you "unlock" Ledger Live, you are allowing the app to communicate with your device, not uploading keys to the cloud.

Creating a new device vs restoring

Login steps (quick)

 1. Open Ledger Live and select "Get Started."
 2. Choose "Set up a new device" or "Restore device from recovery phrase."
 3. Follow on-screen instructions: set a PIN on-device, write down your 24-word recovery phrase, and confirm it.
 4. Install apps for the coins you plan to use via the Manager tab in Ledger Live.
Secure your recovery phrase

Never store your recovery phrase digitally (screenshots, cloud notes, email). Write it on paper or use a metal backup plate for fire and corrosion resistance. Store it in a secure physical location like a safe.

Connect Your Ledger Device

Plugging in and authorizing

Connect your Ledger via the supplied USB cable. Unlock the device with your PIN, then open Ledger Live. When the app requests a connection, approve the action on the device screen.

Troubleshooting connection issues

sudo cp 51-ledger.rules /etc/udev/rules.d/
sudo udevadm control --reload-rules && sudo udevadm trigger

Adding Accounts and Managing Crypto

Install coin apps on device

Open Manager in Ledger Live. Install the specific apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) on your Ledger device. Each app consumes a small amount of device memory; uninstalling an app does not remove your accounts — accounts are derived from your recovery phrase.

Add accounts

 1. Open Ledger Live > Accounts > Add account.
 2. Choose the currency and follow prompts to sync with the device.
 3. Wait for network synchronization; this may take a minute for some chains.

Receiving and sending

To receive funds, select an account, click Receive, and verify the address on your device screen. To send, choose Send, enter the recipient address, confirm fees, and authorize on-device.

Tip: Address verification

Always verify the receiving address on the physical device display — malware on your computer can alter addresses shown in Ledger Live. The device shows the true address derived from your seed; confirm it before accepting any transaction.

Security Best Practices

Keep firmware and apps updated

Update Ledger Live, Ledger device firmware, and individual coin apps regularly through official channels. Updates can contain important security improvements.

Beware of phishing

Physical security

Keep your Ledger device and recovery phrase physically secure. If someone obtains both your device and your recovery phrase, they can fully control your funds.

Advanced Topics

Using WalletConnect & third-party apps

Ledger Live supports integration with third-party decentralized applications through WalletConnect or direct app bridges. When connecting, ensure that any dApp interactions are approved on-device.

Custom derivation and multiple accounts

Advanced users may manage multiple derivation paths or import accounts using extended public keys (xpub) — only do this if you understand the implications and the dApp supports it.

Audit & export

Ledger Live allows exporting of account details (public addresses, transaction history). Never export private keys or recovery phrases.

FAQ

What happens if I lose my Ledger?

If you lose your device, your funds remain recoverable with your 24-word recovery phrase on a compatible Ledger or other supported wallet. If you lose the recovery phrase too, funds are irrecoverable.

Can Ledger Live be used on mobile?

Yes — Ledger Live is available for iOS and Android. The app pairs with Ledger devices via Bluetooth for Ledger Nano X or via USB OTG for compatible phones and devices.

Is Ledger Live free?

The Ledger Live software is free. Network fees apply when sending transactions; these are paid to the blockchain network and not to Ledger.

Deep Dive — Step-by-Step Walkthrough (detailed)

Step 1 — Prepare your environment

Before connecting your Ledger device, prepare a clean environment:

Step 2 — Download and verify Ledger Live

When downloading Ledger Live, verify the file integrity if a checksum is provided by Ledger. While Ledger may not provide checksums for every distribution, use any recommended verification tools in the official documentation. If you cannot verify, reinstall from a different official mirror and contact Ledger support for guidance.

Step 3 — Install and initial run

Follow the platform-specific guidance in the Install section. During the initial run, Ledger Live creates a local configuration and cache to speed up account scans. This cache does not contain private keys.

Step 4 — Creating a device (detailed)

 1. Power up your Ledger device. You will be prompted to choose a PIN of 4–8 digits. Choose a PIN you can remember but that is not obvious (avoid birthdays or simple patterns).
 2. The device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. These words appear only on the device screen. Write each word exactly as shown, in order, on the provided recovery card or on metal backup plates if available.
 3. The device will ask you to confirm a few of the words to ensure your backup is correct.
 4. Once complete, Ledger Live will offer to install default apps. Start by installing Bitcoin and Ethereum if you plan to use those chains.

Step 5 — Restoring a device (detailed)

To restore from an existing recovery phrase, select the restore option and enter the phrase directly on the device using the physical buttons. Never type your recovery phrase into Ledger Live, a browser, or any online form. The restore function on-device derives your private keys from the recovery phrase locally.

Step 6 — Account synchronization and transaction scanning

When you add accounts, Ledger Live will query full nodes or partner services to find your transaction history. The app will show a balance and list of transactions. For older accounts with many transactions this step may take longer; be patient and avoid interrupting the process.

Step 7 — Sending your first transaction (example)

Example: sending 0.01 BTC using Ledger Live:

 1. Open Ledger Live and select your Bitcoin account.
 2. Click Send, paste or scan the recipient address.
 3. Enter the amount (0.01) and choose a fee level. Higher fees confirm faster.
 4. Click Continue. Ledger Live prepares an unsigned transaction and sends it to the device.
 5. On the physical device, carefully check the recipient address and amount — both must match what Ledger Live shows.
 6. Approve the transaction by confirming on the device. The signed transaction is broadcast to the Bitcoin network by Ledger Live or a partnered node network.

Step 8 — Verifying transactions and logs

After broadcasting, check that the transaction appears in the account’s activity list. For extra diligence, copy the transaction ID and paste it into a reliable block explorer to confirm confirmations and finality. Ledger Live may also show network propagation status.

Common advanced troubleshooting

Migration & moving funds

If you plan to migrate funds between accounts or devices (for example, consolidating many small inputs), plan gas and fee economics carefully. For Ethereum and similar chains, combine multiple smaller UTXOs or token balances into a single address if network fees allow, but be mindful that moving tokens can require interacting with smart contracts which may have special steps.

Business & office usage recommendations

For teams and organizations, Ledger provides enterprise-grade solutions and workflows. If you manage assets for an office, consider:

Backup checklist

Glossary of terms

Seed / Recovery phrase

A 24-word list that deterministically generates all private keys for the wallet. Keep it offline and private.

PIN

A device-level numeric password used to unlock the Ledger hardware. Forgetting the PIN will lock the device; you may need to restore using the recovery phrase.

App (on device)

Small applications installed on Ledger that handle specific blockchains (e.g., Bitcoin app, Ethereum app). They enable Ledger to speak the correct protocol with connected software.

Final checklist before you finish

 1. Confirm you have a secure, offline copy of your 24-word recovery phrase.
 2. Test a small transaction before sending large amounts.
 3. Keep Ledger Live updated and use the Manager to remove unneeded apps to save device memory.
 4. Review device approvals visually — never approve unknown or unexpected operations on the device screen.
